End the Nicotine Trap

Flavored tobacco products hook kids. Massachusetts lawmakers should pass legislation to prohibit the sale of flavored tobacco products in the state to address the youth vaping epidemic.

One in five high school students are using e-cigarettes, with damaging consequences for their futures and their health. Vaping often delivers a highly addictive dose of nicotine, which can impact brain development, impair learning and contribute to mood disorders. Research also suggests that once kids start vaping, they are three times more likely than non-users to take up traditional smoking.

Tobacco companies use flavors to target kids. Flavors make it easier for young people to start using tobacco products because they hide the bad taste of tobacco, and make the practice seem harmless. According to the Food and Drug Administration, 70 percent of current youth e-cigarette users said that they used e-cigarettes "because they come in flavors I like."

That's why I'm writing to urge you to support H. 1902 and S.1279, "An Act Regulating Flavored Tobacco Products", filed by Rep. Danielle Gregoire and Sen. John Keenan, which will prohibit the sale of all flavored tobacco products in Massachusetts anywhere except for age-restricted smoking bars.
